Dyspepsia Causes, Symptoms, Treatments, & More

Dyspepsia is a common problem associated with the lack of digestion and intense pain in the abdominal region. The pain is felt mainly in the upper portion of the abdomen. Many factors are responsible for indigestion, including stress, excessive consumption of alcohol, gall bladder stones and excessive smoking.

Overweight people are the worst victims of indigestion. Doctors suggest eating at a fixed time to avoid this malaise. People are also advised to take meals at regular intervals. Fried and spicy foods should be avoided. Patients should also steer clear of foods which are rich in fat.


One of the main symptoms of indigestion is stomach malfunctioning. It generally happens after overeating.

A person can feel a burning sensation (in the stomach) during indigestion. Another common sign of indigestion is nausea. Sometimes, this is also accompanied by uncontrollable burping.

A person can also experience bloating of the stomach and heartburn. One can experience a bitter taste in the mouth during indigestion.

One can feel a rumbling sensation in the stomach during indigestion. Diarrhea also generally occurs in indigestion.

A person suffering from indigestion or diarrhea might feel pain in the abdomen. Problems in the rectum are often associated with indigestion. Excessive flatus, abdominal distension, increased urine frequency and heartburn are the other symptoms.


Indigestion is mainly caused by overeating. Psychological disturbances may also be the reason behind this problem.

Stress is considered one of the main causes for indigestion. Irregular food habit is another main cause of Dyspepsia. Another cause is gluten intolerance. But this is not a very common cause. Eating food products that are rich in fats might also cause diarrhea and indigestion.

Tea, coffee, chocolates, and colas may cause IBS. Indigestion can also occur due to spicy foods.
It might also occur due to vitamin deficiency (niacin, folic acid or B-12).

Sometimes diarrhea, which is a common symptom of dyspepsia, is caused by certain parasites. Another common cause is laxatives abuse.

Yogic management:

Corpse pose, bow pose, fish pose, Uddiyana, forward bend, seated forward bend and plow pose are some of the effective Yoga poses.

Spinal twists, seated forward bend and triangle are considered three good Yoga solutions. Gentle inversion poses, wind relieving posture and seated wide angle pose are also effective Yoga solutions.

Other beneficial Yogasanas include half locust pose, locust pose, backward and forward bends, upward facing dog or cobra, mountain and Peacock poses.

Yoga is very good for strengthening stomach muscles and improving appetite and digestion.

Ayurvedic management:

Ayurvedic researchers suggest drinking warm water. Vata relieving drugs can also help. Mix powder of Vrukshamla, Badara, Dadima and Amlavetasa (640 gm) with Trikatu (Black Pepper, Shunthi and Pippali), five salts and sugar (320 gm). These should be added with vegetables such as cooked cereal and pulses.

Panchakola is yet another effective Ayurvedic medicine. It should be mixed with radish soups, cereal soup and mixed with black pepper. Buttermilk, Arishta and sour gruel are also good Ayurvedic remedies.

Home remedies:

People who suffer from indigestion should eat jawar, old rice, gourd, lentil, coriander leaves, wood apple, green grams soup, dried ginger, black pepper etc.

Pomegranate, skimmed milk, nutmeg, hot water and buttermilk are other effective home remedies for the treatment of dyspepsia.

People are also advised to take complete rest and adequate sleep. They need to avoid maize, wheat, barley, cow pea, pigeon pea, black gram, kidney bean, sweet potato and potato.

Groundnuts, oily foods, chili, chicken, crabs, red meat, prawns, leafy vegetable like drum stick and sorrel and fish should be avoided. They need to eliminate milk and milk products from diet.


Dyspepsia can be treated with medical intervention. Many Ayurvedic medicines are effective in the treatment of dyspepsia. It can be cured by practicing some Yogasanas. There are some effective home remedies for the treatment of Dyspepsia. In serious cases the patients need to consult doctors.
